The megacity Rises to Hazardous Smog Post Celebrations

On Tuesday morning citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves breathing extremely polluted air that was classified as the "alarming" range.

Alarming Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of the city showed an air quality index exceeding 500, which represents 10x the recommended limit recommended by the WHO.

In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of eighteen hundred, representing 15-20x above safe limits.

Firecracker Restrictions and Current Policy Shifts

For the past four years, the government had maintained a total prohibition on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the dangerous haze that covers the city as winter begins.

Yet recently, the current regional leadership petitioned the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been criticized by environmental experts as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Judicial Ruling and Enforcement

To the disappointment of environmental and health campaigners, the court complied with the request, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was extensive flouting of the designated hours across the metropolis, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Several recording stations throughout the capital registered pollution reaching highest levels around late evening to the most severe readings recorded during celebrations in at least the past three years.

Regional Consequences

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the festival also initiated a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming deteriorating pollution levels in the city of Lahore on contaminants coming from neighboring India following the events.

Long-Standing Pollution Crisis

Extremely elevated readings of pollution in Delhi have continued as a significant challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.

During the festival period, the levels of dangerous particulate matter in the air has been documented to spike to 70% higher the peak readings ever documented in the Chinese city, which was once viewed as the world's most polluted urban center.

Diverse Contamination Factors

This crisis in Delhi is caused by a mix of different contributors including transportation pollution, construction debris, construction activities, waste incineration and smoke from crop residue ignition in nearby regions of farming communities.

In these regions, rural residents regularly ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, producing hazardous haze that then gets trapped over the capital as cooler air sets in.

Health and Economic Toll

Public health and economic toll on the nearly 33 million people residing in the Delhi area is substantial, according to various research.

These hazardous conditions causes increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and can result in malignancies.

Environmental contamination is projected to be accounting for 10,000 early deaths annually in the capital.
