Catherine's Annual Christmas Service of Carols Spotlights Community Volunteers
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have helped their communities.
The sizable congregation will enjoy a selection of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.
A Theme of Love and Generosity
The theme of the concert, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.
Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.
"The time, care and compassion you give, often quietly and unspoken, and without any expectation or recognition, make an extraordinary difference to the well-being of people," Her Royal Highness stated in a note prior to the festive gathering.
A Steady Comeback
The princess has been making her own gradual return to public life following her health challenges and treatment, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she discussed recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".
Musical Talent and Access
Those coming to the Abbey will enjoy performances from young musicians aided by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for music lessons.
An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been supported by the organisation, with funding assisting with instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "awesome" to be performing at the concert.
"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to cultivate their performance abilities.
A Family Affair
Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who is a euphonium player, will also be at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many important people," she said.
Among the guests will be representatives of different generations.
That will feature young Saphia Turner, nine, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to collect donations for food banks.
Festive Decor and Performances
The Abbey has been decorated with handcrafted festive wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett helping to make them.
Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the perfect culmination."
The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
