Can You Crack It? That Overlooked Dutch Invention Which Shaped the Modern Globe
One can find numerous candidates to claim the title of “world’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.
As per a new book, however, that title belongs to a mechanised timber mill invented by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Before automated sawing, building a modest trading ship necessitated around 10 sawyers working for 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven sawmills, an identical quantity of cut lumber might be produced in less than seven days.”
Owing to their rapid automated saw, that turned timber to boards with almost no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to build ships faster than any other nation, an advantage that unleashed a century of Dutch maritime, financial and cultural supremacy across the continent and the world.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Device
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues the writer, was “mankind’s first true factory apparatus.” A wind turbine rotated a wheel. A single part converted the circular movement into up-and-down action for the saw. A separate mechanism changed the spinning motion into a lateral movement advancing the timber to the blade. A ratchet system shifted the wood forward a measured step per cycle.
“Each element seemed modest by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance was to integrate these parts in order that they operated within a precisely synchronized order, cutting with each downward motion while advancing with each upward stroke. It was a remarkably intelligent use of fundamental parts.”
